Rugs can be a costly addition to your home, especially if you want them to match your interiors exactly. So why not make your own? This tutorial takes you through the basics of creating your own pom pom rug. You can either copy the design made here, or let your inner interior designer run wild, and design your own!
- Clover Pom Pom makers in 2 1/2 inch and 3 3/8 inch
- Double knit wool acrylic yarn
- Canvas Rug backing – the kind for latch hook projects (I used 50cm by 100cm backing)
With your 2 1/2 inch pom pom maker, make the following amount of pom poms in these colours: 10 x purple/lilac, 9 x light blue, 12 x mint green, 14 x yellow, 18 x peach, 21 x pink. Then make 20 in white, using your 3 3/8 inch pom pom maker. MAKE SURE TO LEAVE THE TAILS LONG! These will be used to tie the pom poms onto the backing.
First, find the centre of your rug backing. Now, tie one purple pom pom on by threading each tail through a square, then tying the tails together with a double knot. Leave the tails long for now. Continue to add the rest of your purple [pom poms in a pyramid configuration (4, 3, 2, 1)]
Now tie on your blue pom poms in an arch configuration closely over the purple. Continue in this fashion in the following colours – green, yellow, peach, pink and finally the large white ones.
Once they are all secure, you can either trim the tails or weave them in. Now trim the backing down around your design (the rainbow, in this case). You can even cover the backing with another material if you wish to hide the workings. And there you have it: a soft, personalised rug, perfect for adding instant colour and fun to your home!
