Julie from the Crafty Beggars Creates With Prima Mixed Media Kit!

Hi all! It’s Julie from the Crafty Beggars. I had great fun using this Art Basic Mixed Media Essentials kit along with their stencils and top quality texture brushes – they provide hours of guaranteed fun!julie-blog-1

For the ‘Live a Thankful Life’ picture (don’t you just love that motto!) I applied a background of a pink wash to a Prima watercolor board – these are good to use as the paint doesn’t dry too quickly so you have an element of flexibility which is good. I used the Art Basics Soft Gloss gel, tinted with pink Finnabair Mica powder, which gave my backdrop a lovely sheen.

I then stenciled the motto in green and a darker shade of pink, achieved by adding more Mica powder to a smaller amount of gel so the color was more concentrated and intense. Finally I added a few stamped-on hearts which served as a border and a little bit of bling in the form of some stick-on jewels (you can never have too much sparkle in my opinion!)

The smallest Prima watercolor board then came in handy for a miniature seaside scene. I applied a thin blue wash for the sky using the soft gloss gel again, then switched to the 3D gloss gel so the ‘sea’ had more texture. The ‘White Sand’ texture paste from the Art Basic Mixed Media Essentials kit was fantastic – it’s really like sand – especially when it’s colored with gold Finnabair Mica powder and applied with the textured end of the brush that complements the kit. Some tiny pebbles, and a decoupaged fisherman and boats completed the scene – along with some hand drawn birds in flight and a sunshine made from an old forgotten brooch I found in a drawer!
