Advice from Sarah Payne
One of the most fun things to do when you get your new sewing machine, is create a stitch library. This is basically two long pieces of fabric about 6 inches wide, so you can stitch out the decorative stitches that come included with your machine. In the case of the VQ4 this is a whooping (1,100 stitches) so you may just wish to choose sections to stitch out.
Not only will this give you the opportunity to get to see the many beautiful stitches included with your sewing machine, but it will also get you confidently stitching with your Brother VQ4, without the pressure of creating something or following a pattern.
So how do you create a stitch library with the Brother Innov-is VQ4?
Get two pieces of plain fabric (because the stitches will be the star) and put them on top of each other. This will stop the stitches puckering as you sew them. I often use calico because I like the look of it, but you can use old sheets or anything you have lying around.
Then mark a line from one across the width of the fabric. This is your starting line. It is easier to make a fold rather than drawing a line, because it is easier to press out the line, than remove a mark. Change to the monogramming foot (Marked with the letter N) because this is specially designed for sewing over decorative stitches. Then simply start sewing. I like to sew a couple of stitch designs on each row, otherwise it gets VERY long, VERY quickly. Keep marking new lines when you feel you may be drifting.
One of the most useful features of the VQ4 is the laser guideline feature. This shows you a nice bright line in front of the foot and is adjustable so you can put it where you want it. (See Figure 2). I found this was great for following the marking folds, especially as this machine sews sideways (yes, you heard that correctly). This is how you can create such large decorative stitches. I found that the laser guideline helped very much to keep the stitches parallel.
Once I stitch out my library, I like to write the number of the stitches next to them so I can easily locate them when I want to use the stitch. Then I can roll it up and keep it with my sewing machine for future reference.
